Jemma Bemrose

Graduate, 2020

Elanora State High School graduate Jemma Bemrose, class of 2020, has achieved a remarkable milestone in her rugby career, recently being named co-captain of the Queensland Reds for the 2025 Super Rugby Women’s season. At just 22 years old, she will make history as the youngest-ever Reds women's captain, a testament to her rapid rise and exceptional talent.

Bemrose expressed her excitement and gratitude for the opportunity. “It’s a huge honour,” said the Gold Coast-based athlete. “Wearing this Queensland jersey is always a privilege, but being entrusted with a leadership role makes it even more special.”

Her journey into rugby was unconventional. Initially a touch football player, Bemrose discovered her passion for rugby during high school after being inspired by the rugby sevens competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, held on the Gold Coast. “I was in Year 10 at the time, and one of the girls teed up a bunch of touch girls to give rugby sevens a try in school comps when I was at Elanora State High,” she recalled. The transition was natural for her, as she had always played touch football with a more physical edge.

Since then, Bemrose has gone from strength to strength, playing for the Palm Beach Currumbin Alleygators before joining Bond University, where she was part of a premiership-winning team. Her dedication, skill, and leadership qualities have now earned her a place at the helm of the Reds, where she will co-captain the team alongside seasoned Wallaroo Ivania Wong.

As she prepares to take on this leadership role, Bemrose’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes, proving that with determination and hard work, extraordinary achievements are within reach.
