Dempsey Koenig

In addition to excelling in graphic design, Dempsey took charge of photography for the pathway grades and even lent a helping hand as a team manager for our Open Women’s BMD Premiership team.

This is what the club had to say about Dempsey “At the Tweed Seagulls RLFC, we believe in providing opportunities for talented individuals to shine and progress to higher levels, not only on the field but also off it. Dempsey Koenig, a remarkable young creative, recently made a significant career transition from his Trainee role with us to joining the North Queensland Cowboys in the NRL. Dempsey’s journey highlights our pathway system and the exceptional opportunities available for young creatives within our organisation”.

This is what Dempsey had to say about his move to Townsville and the North Queensland Cowboys “Around the start of May 2023, I saw that the Cowboys were looking for a graphic designer to join their team. I already knew their Head of Graphic Design through social media and had worked on a project with her before and I reached out to her and had a chat about potentially moving up to Townsville. I went through a three-part process from submitting my resume, to a formal interview, then to a graphic design test. After the graphic design test, I was offered the role and I accepted the position. My current roles at the Cowboys include creating graphics for a variety of things from membership and ticketing campaigns, social media posts, signage for lockers, photography, videography and helping run the club's social media and web channels.”

Dempsey graduated from Elanora State High School in 2021. During his schooling years he was given the tools to shape his future having studied Media Arts in years 11 and 12. Dempsey was passionate about graphic design and photography from a young age. This passion came from his mum who was already in the industry and taught him a lot when he first started wanting to learn. Dempsey was teaching himself from YouTube videos and reaching out to other content creators asking for tips on what he could do to grow as a graphic designer. He also did work experience in Grade 12 with Queensland Rugby League with their Lead Graphic Designer which made him want to work in the industry even more.

After leaving school Dempsey completed a Diploma of Graphic Design. In May 2022 the Seagulls Head of Sponsorship and Media reached out to Dempsey asking if he was potentially interested in joining their team in a Graphic Designer role. So, the two of them sat down and had a chat and a few weeks later Dempsey started with Tweed Heads Seagulls. When Dempsey first started, his role was only part-time because he was still completing his Diploma. He was in the office three days a week and worked gamedays on the weekend. His role at the Tweed Seagulls included making graphics for social media, web and other collateral such as signage, running the club’s social media accounts and website and also helping out with photography.
